Web 2.0.1 sounds better

Recently, I’ve heard a lot of pundiits proclaim that the “desktop is dead” and that eventually everything will move to one or more web based services - Web 2.0 services, that is. As I have written before, I believe some content is very suitable for the web while others are not. I have also maintained that the traditional desktop app as we knew it has been undergoing a significant (r)evolution that is blurring the boundaries between the desktop and the web.

One could try and label these new breed of desktop applications as “web” based and therefore as Web 2.0 applications but its a stretch. Of course, “Web 2.0″ means different things to different people but it was refreshing to see Nick Bradbury’s revision to the “What is Web 2.0?” meme:

WEB 2.01 RELEASE NOTES

REVISION 1: It’s about providing something useful, not something trendy.
REVISION 2: It’s a mistake to rule out the desktop.
REVISION 3: Companies need to stop saying “mine” about stuff they have no right to own.

Can’t argue with that.
